[2]it’s something i found on the article “For Fear of Flying” of Sarah Anne Lawless. When i read about traditional witchcraft, i feel like shit for being a “modern” witch, cause it seems it’s a “false” witchcraft. Without talking about this kind of comments “So tired of empty rituals and new age fuckery and what I call, “Disney Witches.”” or “There aren’t a lot of us who do this. I gave up Wicca and newage fuckery years ago.”
Hello Witches,
We got these two anon messages today and we’d like to share our opinion on this matter. The theme of invalidating other Witches based on people’s feelings seems to be a huge thing nowadays. So the best way to respond to respond to this kind of hate is by the form of a letter!
Edit: We were contacted by the lovely anon, informing us that they were, in fact, a witch too. They were merely showing us something that made them feel invalidated and we poorly read the message and reacted without taking the time to properly read it. However, the message still stands for those who oppose us, modern witches!
We support you, Anon! We apologize for jumping to conclusions but our message stands for all those who oppose us as a community!
All changed words will have an asterisk beside it to properly represent what we were trying to convey. ( * )
Dear Gatekeeping People*,
Personally, to hear such a negative view on Modern Witchcraft is actually sickening, there is so much more to witchcraft than the belief systems of others. *People* shouldn’t be discouraging young Witches or even Witches who identify as Modern Witches solely on the fact that *they* feel that it’s invalid.
Reading someone’s opinion on the matter doesn’t make it gospel either, the author is entitled to feel the way they do. Though, the hatred that oozes with each word and the insulting manner *they* speak to the Witches of the 21st century isn’t exactly encouraging.
It’s safe to assume that I strongly disagree with the *author*, Anon.
Yes, Witchcraft perhaps is not what it used to be but to demean the craft of those who are now carrying the torch of Witchcraft, in general, is not the way to go.
Telling others that their craft is invalid due to your closed minded views, is actually doing more harm than good. *They* are effectively telling these people that they are living a fantasy are frauds and *they’re* discouraging them from learning what *they* want them to learn.
I don’t understand why people think this way, it really leaves me absolutely gobsmacked. Witchcraft is free-flowing and * since you read that negativity from a negative author, here is a positive one to combat that!*
“ The law of change means that our religious forms and visions must evolve as society evolved and changes. New situations create new spiritual needs. The old temples must be rebuilt, the old forms of religious revived and revised.
Symbols that have become mundane and meaningless refreshed by a return to the source of religious inspiration – contact with the Gods themselves. This means that we must all go deep into ourselves, into the storehouse of collective memory which is our human inheritance and meet there with our gods and hear their voices.
The Pagan traditions are not religions whose promulgated by religious leaders who believe their thoughts and deeds are infallible– incapable of being wrong. Pagans take a humbler view. ” – Principles of Paganism by Vivianne Crowley
That being said, to force people from the modern age to follow practices created for and by people of the past is absolutely wrong. Times are changing, crafts are evolving. This isn’t to say that we are ignoring the roots, on the contrary, we are reviving them and breathing a new life to these practices.
We learn from the past in order to create a brighter future and the next generation will do the exact same. We as Witches, should encourage the future generation of Witches to carry the torch of Witchcraft and encourage the adaptations and new life that each hand that touches it brings.
We are Modern Witches, brought up in the age of technology and breathing out the new era of Witchcraft.
Witches from all paths, races, sexualities, and belief systems are VALID and your opinion doesn’t change that.
Sincerely yours, The Modern Witches of the 21st Century.
