I grew up with an old yellow stool that was bought from an antique store. This stool was chipping paint and old, too wobbly to sit on but my dad liked it as a decoration. I just want to give my two cents on this and tell you a story.
A couple weeks ago, I was hired at Target. I have a job at Target. Not a big deal right?
It is a big deal because iâm a transman.Â
It doesnât take a genius to conclude that itâs hard for me, my brothers, and sisters to get a job. There are legal restraints regarding the job and if you donât pass, itâs hard to be taken seriously at a job interview.
Right on the application, it asks what your preferred name is. It also asks if there is anything that target should know. I put the fact that I am a transman, expecting not to get a call because usually when you put that down, people will throw out the application. I got TWO interviews.
At the interview, they asked me about it. I told them I am on hormones and they told me that they didnât care. Not in the sense that they donât emotionally care, but that it didnât matter. I was male and thatâs all that mattered. They also told me that they give sex same couples benefits in states that do not recognize them as a married couple.
At my job orientation, I was not misgendered once. Even my supervisors who werenât sure of my gender avoided pronoun use, which I found only happens when youâve had pronoun training. They gave me a name tag with my preferred name and didnât ask questions. I felt safe and respected, which is huge for a trans* person.
TLDR: Target is amazing not just for the LGB, but also the T. Shop there for the rest of your life.

It always bewilders me when someone asks âhow do i find my god/goddessâ. Where are all these people getting the idea that there is a deity inherent or pre-determined for you? Is there some book or source out there telling people they need to find a deity that is specifically theirs?
I definitely remember early in my studies reading in books about witchcraft (neo-wicca) the importance of finding a patron deity. This made it even more difficult for me to build my own secular practice.

Itâs possible Riordan brought that idea to the forefront of non-pagan/witchy consciousness, but to be fair it was an idea that was deeply prevalent in our own communities long before he was writing those books. (There was fiction that was coming out at the time inspired by ârealâ witchcraft that also often carried those ideas, but they didnât explode into popularity the way Percy Jackson did)
Like, I was a baby witch in 1997, and I practiced completely without religion or gods at all. Flash forward to 1999, and I was a pagan, because I thought I had to be, and that idea came from the 101 books written about witchcraft at that time.
From 1999 to 2003, thanks to books, but also ~the internet~ and all the resources Iâd found on it, I was desperately searching for a patron deity, because I thought I had to. I have no idea why, given that I was working just fine without one up until then, but I was very insecure in those days and any time someone said you had to do something, I immediately felt less than if I wasnât doing it. Live and learn, haha.
Neo-Wicca specifically pushed the idea of having a goddess each for the mother/maiden/crone roles back then, and I wasnât the only one on the various forums back in the day trying to figure out who mine were, and the male equivalents of that, which nobody ever actually agreed what they were.
That whole narrative was another one that ran very closely to what was spread about patrons at the time. Weâve been doing this to ourselves for ages
On top of that, a lot of people have found those kinds of relationships with deities, and so when people come onto tumblr, wordpress, youtube, et cetera, and they see people talking about that, they think thatâs what normal, and they think they want that.
As an example, I remember waaaay back in the Khal days, she spoke of her âCompanionâ and got people in her inbox like, âHow do I get a Companion?!?â as if it were dress sheâd bought that they liked and were trying to find the store for and not her own personal relationship. :///
I think another part of it may be that lots of people start exploring paganism at an age where theyâre also exploring other aspects of their identity, and under pressure to define themselves in really specific ways. Like, as an adult, no one gives a shit what brands you wear or what music you listen to, but as a teen that stuff defines your whole social life. And trying to figure out which god you worship (even though itâs, you know, polytheism), or which hyper-specific type of witch you are (even though any experienced practitioner is inevitably going to end up with a pretty broad set of foundational skills), is an extension of that mentality.
Also, Iâm pretty sure the background noise from Christianity makes it kind of difficult for a lot of people to wrap their heads around the concept of polytheism and not necessarily focusing on one deity above others.
This isnât to say some people arenât driven by a genuine deep desire for intimacy with the divine. But the fact that people who would rather have secular practices feel pressured into it shows that something else is in play.
I think it has a lot to do with the neo-Wiccan/Pagan idea of each person having a patron or a patroness (or in some cases, one of each).Â
Itâs also really easy to find the narrative of âfindingâ or âdiscoveringâ one or two main gods/goddesses on Tumblr and in other pagan spaces. When you see one story over and over and over again it becomes really easy to believe thatâs the only way things can go.Â
I also think that for a lot of young people who are new to paganism, thereâs a sort of romanticism at play with the âinherent/chosen deityâ mindset. The idea of someone choosing their own gods to worship and doing a lot of hard work to build a relationship that is new probably doesnât appeal nearly as much to that set of people. Understandably. (As a lonely Newbie the idea of a god who was just inherently Mine in some way was insanely appealing to me).

Iâve sparred them and every one of them telegraphs their moves about two weeks in advance, and are slower than my dead grandpa because their huge useless muscles get in the damn way.Â
Now. I also work with a couple of guys who are not weightlifters. They do, however, do very physical jobs and are Big Dudes. Picture this sort of build.Â

I went through a LOT of fucked up shit and let me tell you: my abusers never got punished. My father, a good man that also was abused as a child, got cancer and died a slow painful death. Funny how the threefold laws only seem to apply to witches that try to fight back, uh?
