Love van gogh but the whole severed his ear for a lover is historically incorrect. It was a story he told to protect his friend who actually cut his ear off during an argument (though believed to have been an accident). In fact from witnesses of the time writing about it, Gogh attacked his friend first who then used a knife in defense. 

But it more so does show that Gogh was mentally ill seeing as he attacked his friend in a sudden unreasonable rage.
